five Hopes for YA in 2011

Hosted by Persnickety Snark
My five hopes for YA in 2011 are pretty simple.
- The death of protagonists who don’t think they are attractive despite everyone throwing themselves at them. Own your good looks, honey.
- The death of the love triangle. There are plenty of fish in the sea. Stop fighting over the flounder.
- The death of cliff hangers. Although I enjoy series, I strongly believe that each book in a series needs to be strong enough to stand on its own with a satisfactory ending.
- The death of stalkers. Are stalkers are bring sexy back? Really? Huh? No, it’s not romantic. Get a restraining order asap.
- The death of in your face epilogues. Sometimes is it just nice to draw your own conclusions without everything being so black and white.

Well, I don't really mind cliffhangers or the concrete endings, however I am so with you on the rest. Particularly the love triangle bit. If I read one more plot that involves girl meets boy, instant connection and but then meets other boy and he's kind of hot too…angst ensues, I will scream. Seriously authors, find a new plot device.

You nailed it!
Unless the book is a comic or a graphic novel, having a cliff hanger is a cheap plea for a future sale.
I would add Lose parents who are deaf, dumb, blind, self-involved, and mute to their kids' issues. If you don't know a boy has been sleeping in your daughter's room or several months you haven't got a leg to stand on. I think this is used as a device so a teen can do stuff that a normal parent would notice.
I think if an epilogue is over a page it is another chapter.

LOL! Yeah, I agree. And yet, I strongly doubt we will be rid of these YA book themes anytime soon.

dayum, tell it like it is! LOVE you list Missie! every single one of them rock (though sometimes I *can* stand a cliffhanger). awesome list!

Another great list. I put the cliffhanger and love triangles on my list. They are really starting to annoy me especially cliffhangers. You don't always need them to get people to keep reading the series. If the writing is good you are going to come back for more.

I quite like love triangles and cliffhangers but definitely agree with your other three! My own list is at http://yayeahyeah.blogspot.com/2010/12/5-hopes-for-ya-in-2011.html if you want to take a look.

No cliffhangers! Oh yea. I can deal a bit with the others, but no cliffhangers!! We should put that on a shirt or something.

Oh gosh, YES to every single one of those! I couldn't agree more with you. I don't *hate* love triangles, but I much prefer love where there are only two people involved. I always have a harder time liking the main character if she's stringing along two guys.
The rest, though, I agree with you 110% I love how you described the stalkers. Seriously, what is up with that?!

I'm so with you on love triangles and cliffhangers! I would LOVE to see more standalone books…and less triangles. How about a love pentagon?

Great fives! I think the death of love triangles are on everyone's lists for next year.

Awesome list. I am totally with you on 2,3, and 4. I do agree with 1 and 5 too .

“Own your good looks, honey.” Hahahaha, I love your comments! I agree with everything, although I sometimes do appreciate a good epilogue
Hope your Christmas was faaaaaabulous!

LOL loved the resolutions!! I do like epilogues though =P

You nailed it Missie! If I had all these good looking boys falling at my feet as some of these YA heroines do, I would be convinced I was the greatest thing since sliced bread;) And yes, no more cliffhangers! I love book series, but I hate having to wait a year in between when huge things have happened *cough* Shadowfever *cough*
