First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, Book 1) by Jeaniene Frost

Product Desription
The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows – her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield – and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s dark past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness – and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who craves a taste of her.

He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human – even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the demon nightmare together…

Because once the first drop of crimson falls, they will both be lost.

Review
I really think I enjoyed this book better than some of the Night Huntress books.  Yeah, I love Bones, but being in Cat’s head all the time was kind of a drag.  But that wasn’t the case with First Drip of Crimson.  The writing style in this book was much better; Frost made wonderful strides in prose with this book! I really enjoyed reading about Denise and Spade in third person because their way of thinking was completely divulged to the reader which added depth and understanding to action.

Where as in the original NH series,  Frost writes Cat’s POV in first person and it is very action/plot/dialogue heavy; FDOC in third person gave the characters more to muse about and describe along with the heavy action/plot/dialogue that I’ve come to find is completely exhilarating about the books.

What fascinated me most about the book was that I wasn’t expecting to like Denise and Spade so much.  In the NH books, yeah, I thought Spade was funny at times, and I really admired his loyalty to Bones, but he kind of creeped me out, like Ian did.   Denise, on the other hand, bored me to death.  I didn’t understand her friendship with Cat.  My question was always how could they be ‘best friends’ when they hardly spend anytime together, and why is Denise even around?  I’m so glad I got to see a completely different side to both characters with FDOC.

I simply adore Frost’s take on vampires and their societies.  The master vampires, their dedication to their lines and the way they are not afraid to show affection is a refreshing take on vampire culture.  Also, the interaction between Bones, Spade and Ian is delightful.  They make me laugh till I’m crying! It’s wonderful.  Plus, the sexy scenes between Spade and Denise in FDOC were HOT! And I mean heart pumping, mind melting HOT! Starting with the first time Spade drinks from Denise! All I can say is…Whoa!

Yeah, now that I think about it, I definitely liked this book much better than a few of the NH books and I thought it was an exciting book to kick of the NHW series, which I find I’m anxious to read.  I’m even curious about the possibility of a book based on Ian and I definitely want a Vlad book!

And dont forget to check out this fabulous interview with Jeaniene Frost by one of my favorite book bloggers Greenabsinthia from Scribbles & Stories.

Interview with Jeaniene Frost

In the interview, Ms. Frost reveals that many more Cat and Bones books are planned (*squees* four maybe even five more)!!! How awesome would it be if at least one of them was in Bones’s POV?!

I already read this book, but it was such a rushed read that –after this review–I feel like I *need* to read it again :)

I'm so glad that you posted this review.

In all honesty, I have been putting this book on the back burner for the same reason that you mentioned above — I never understood the whole Denise character. I liked Spade, but just never got into Denise.

With that being said, after reading your review, I guess I'll need to bring it forth on the TBR list again!
