Faefever: The Fever Series (Book 3) by Karen Marie Moning

Product Description
When MacKayla Lane receives a torn page from her dead sister’s journal, she is stunned by Alina’s desperate words. And now MacKayla knows that her sister’s killer is close. But evil is closer. And suddenly the sidhe-seer is on the hunt: For answers. For revenge. And for an ancient book of dark magic so evil, it corrupts anyone who touches it.

Mac’s quest for the Sinsar Dubh takes her into the mean, shape-shifting streets of Dublin, with a suspicious cop on her tail. Forced into a dangerous triangle of alliance with V’lane, an insatiable Fae prince of lethally erotic tastes, and Jericho Barrons, a man of primal desires and untold secrets, Mac is soon locked in a battle for her body, mind, and soul.

Review (with spoilers)
Pri-ya: A human addicted to Fae sex.

This is a term Mac learns in book 1 when she first encounters a Unseelie Fae of the lowest level of their kind. And I guess I should have seen this as the biggest foreshadow in the history of stories, but I missed it.  Sadly, by the end of Faefever, this is what Mac has become.  Enchanted by the sexual magic of three Unseelie Princes who have broken through from their realm to the human world, Mac is forced to become a porn star.

What a travesty!  *shakes head*

Why plan a rape of the brutalist kind for your heroine???  Not only could Mac not deny her desire for the Unseelie Princes, she enjoyed them even though she knew it was a violation, even though she knew the sex was killing her.  And that is how the book ends, with her enthralled by her deadly lovers.  WTF?  The first time we get any nookie in the series and it has to be this! Seriously? If ever there was such a obvious plot device of that which does not kill you only makes you stronger, this is it.  No doubt book 4, Dreamfever, will have Mac rebounding from this experience as a more vengeful, hateful fighter, as if her sister’s death wasn’t enough.  And I didn’t appreciate anticipating something great to develop between Mac and Barron only to have this slapped in my face.

Appalling as the end of the book was, the beginning was better than the last; even though not many more answers are revealed, there is a lot of action.

The mystery surrounding Barrons continues.  The characterization built into him is brilliant. He is direct, controlled, cryptic to the point of being scary, yet around Mac, he lets his guard down in very small increments, he laughs and enjoys himself, then he becomes violent when he realize what has happened. For instance, when Mac presents him with a birthday cake, Barrons considers indulging her by celebrating, but then he unexpectaly explodes, destroys the cake and sneers:

“Never do that again, Ms. Lane. Do not insult me with your silly rituals, and idiotic platitudes. Never try to humanize me. Don’t think we’re the same, you and I. We’re not.”

We stared at each other.

He was so close, his body electric, his expression savage.

I moistened my lips. His gaze fixed on them. I think I stopped breathing.

He jerked so sharply away that his long dark coat sliced air, and turned his back to me. “Was that an invitation, Ms. Lane?”

“If it was?” I asked, astonishing myself. What did I think I was doing?

“I don’t do hypotheticals. Little girl.”

*melts* Yes, he makes ‘bad boys’ look like freaking buddhist monks! But by this point, Mac is so used to his temper and is more disturbed by the ruined cake than his anger.  LOL!

So, *heavy sigh* even though I have very mixed (but mostly negative) feelings about this series, the ‘I have to know what the heck’ is my driving force to finish these books. Which, I suppose, was the author’s intent because I can’t deny my curiosity has been peeked and the mythology she has developed about the fae is interesting.

It's one of those series you just can't stop reading. I alternated from loving Mac to being completely annoyed by her. Out of all the books in the series, this was my least favorite. I can't wait to see what you think of DreamFever.

I just posted my Jericho Barrons theory- I think I know who and what he is.
I am really enjoying this series (just started the fourth book Dreamfever) and already I can't wait for the next one!

I love the Fever series. Actually, I think it's more that I just love Barrons. Dreamfever was good IMO. Anxiously waiting for the final installment.
