Dreamfever: The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning

Product Description
He has stolen her past, but MacKayla will never allow her sister’s murderer to take her future. Yet even the uniquely gifted sidhe-seer is no match for the Lord Master, who has unleashed an insatiable sexual craving that consumes Mac’s every thought-and thrusts her into the seductive realm of two very dangerous men, both of whom she desires but dares not trust.

As the enigmatic Jericho Barrons and the sensual Fae prince V”lane vie for her body and soul, as cryptic entries from her sister’s diary mysteriously appear and the power of the Dark Book weaves its annihilating path through the city, Mac’s greatest enemy delivers a final challenge…

It’s an invitation Mac cannot refuse, one that sends her racing home to Georgia, where an even darker threat awaits. With her parents missing and the lives of her loved ones under siege, Mac is about to come face-to-face with a soul-shattering truth-about herself and her sister, about Jericho Barrons…and about the world she thought she knew.

Review (and rant)
*screams like a banshee* Moning is the queen of evil chiffies!!  Gah! This book was a total stall. She is dragging this story out beyond epic proportions, and it is so frustrating!

From what I’ve noticed by discussing this book, I know that people loved the beginning, and I can’t blame them.  After Jericho Barrons finally retrieves Mac (although he was not the one to rescue her from the Fae Princes), they have one hell of a sex-a-thon, and it is wow!  But I gotta say, I had major issues with this because, for as much as I wanted them to finally get their groove on, I didn’t want it to happen while Mac was Pri-ya (a human addicted to Fae sex).  I mean, really? The only way to bring back Mac’s sanity was to promise to bang her if she agreed to listen to you! Agh! I found this very disturbing. Then when she comes out of her sex induced coma she leaves Barrons, making it seem like the only reason she would ever be with him is if she was Pri-ya.  How is that the ultimate romance between them that we have all been waiting for???

As I predicted, Mac comes out of the experience as hell on wheels and seeking vengeance for being rape by the Fae Princes. She even accuses Barrons of raping her because she was out of her mind while they were together (which I agreed with).  Naturally, he doesn’t agree with this assessment because he dance, sang and talked to her while trying to ‘heal’ her, even showed her pictures of who she once was to try to get her to come back to being herself.  I guess that stuff was kind of sweet (in a sick way) and if anyone can f**k a person back to life, it would be a man like Barrons.

I will not deny that since the beginning of the series, I’ve adored Barrons.  I don’t think he is a bad guy for the intense sexercise program he put Mac through, and oddly enough, I don’t think he necessarily took advantage of her, but it was kind of creepy because the whole time she was in this kind of dream state.  To add insult to injury to this whole warped situation, Barrons, being his true self, doesn’t let up with the snarky comments:

“One would think you‘d have gotten all the Fae shoved in your mouth you could stand, Ms. Lane.”

After a whole lot of nothing in which Mac discovers that the Unseelie Fae have escaped their dimension and killed off massive populations of humans, she vows to fight to turn the planet back to right by ridding it of the fae, but gets lost in the Silvers, other deadly dimensions of the fae realm.

Book 4 ends with Mac realizing she has inadvertently killed someone of significance to her, but the reader does not find out who it was. *blinks at evil cliffy in disbelief*

Overall, wildly frustrating series that is better to read after book 5 is released, and even then, I suspect you will only have to read books 1 and 5 to get the gist of things.  The books in the middle are fillers. I will say that is writing is good but I don’t necessary think that Moning is a smart writer is she feels like she has to overly exaggerate details and draw out plot to tell a story.  But my opinion counts very little here as this is a very popular series, or so I’ve heard.  Either way, I think you will LOVE Jericho Barrons! I know I do, and he is the reason I’m looking forward to the next book.  I want to find out what the heck he is.  Biggest mystery ever! So check it out and let me know what you think. ;)

Up next in the Fever Series

Shadowfever: The Fever Series (book 5) by Karen Marie Moning

Product Description:
MacKayla Lane was just a child when she and her sister, Alina were given up for adoption and banished from Ireland forever.

Twenty years later, Alina is dead and Mac has returned to the country that expelled them to hunt her sister’s murderer. But after discovering that she descends from a bloodline both gifted and cursed, Mac is plunged into a secret history: an ancient conflict between humans and immortals that have lived concealed among us for thousands of years.

What follows is a shocking chain of events with devastating consequences, and now Mac struggles to cope with grief, while continuing her mission to acquire and control the Sinsar Dubh–a book of dark, forbidden magic scribed by the mythical Unseelie King that contains the power to create and destroy worlds.
In an epic battle between humans and Fae, the hunter becomes the hunted when the Sinsar Dubh turns on Mac, and begins mowing a deadly path through those she loves.

Who can she turn to? Who can she trust? Who is the woman that haunts her dreams? More importantly, who is Mac and what is the destiny she glimpses in the black and crimson designs of an ancient tarot card?

From the luxury of the Lord Master’s penthouse, to the sordid depths of an Unseelie nightclub, from the erotic bed of her lover, to the terrifying bed of the Unseelie King, Mac’s journey will force her to face the truth of her exile, and make a choice that will either save the world…or destroy it.

Now we have to wait till December for the final one! I just don't see how its all going to be answered- KMM's website says is a long book so I am happy about that.

:)

PS- I didn't mind Barrons & Mac's sex after the rape because I think she would have died without it. He had to because she was in physical pain simply being a Pri-ya, I think it was more than 'healing' her, I think he saved her life. No woman has ever survived and come back to being normal once she was Pri-ya, so I think without sex with Barrons she would have died. Plus I am glad it was Barrons and not V'lane who got to her first.

Great post!

Now I am going to dig into another fantasy fiction series I've heard great things about, Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking series- gonna start that one tonight!

It's been fun comparing thoughts with you on the Fever series as we read them together. Thanks!

God, I feel evil for having recommended the Fever series to you. But I needed another friend who read it and could rant with me. Sorry, D31S!

I agree with the last comment. I didn't mind Barrons having sex with her while she was Pri-ya, because it was necessary. I too think she would have died without his attentions. Plus, we KNOW he cares about her, so he was the perfect man for the job. It wasn't all about sex for him. He loves her. If she has been in another's hand, she would have never come back, since they wouldn't care enough to bring her back to herself. You know what I mean?

How could you not love Barrons? :sigh: Now you've joined the ranks with the rest of us who screamed when we got to the end of this book. I finished it when I was at my parents and my mom went: “what's wrong with you-bad ending?” I couldn't even begin to explain it to her!

@Anonymous,
Have you read the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost? Loaded with intense romance!

I haven't had a chance to read the Dreamfever yet, but it kind of makes sense that if the LM and the Unseelie princes used sex to drive Mac mad, then Barrons could use sex to heal her. Wow! Read the first 3 books this week and can't wait to get the fourth which I had to order.

I can also understand Barrons being so nasty to her: he loves her, but is so afraid of his love for her so he tries to drive her away.

@Anonymous,

It is hard to imagine Barrons being afraid of anything, but I think you are right. Although I think he has experienced love before, maybe it has never been the kind he feels for Mac. His love for her seems to be more intense.

Let me know what you think of Dreamfever.
