You Suck: Review and Giveaway
You Suck: A Love Story by Christopher MooreProduct Description from Goodreads
Nineteen-year-old Tommy is a bewildered hipster recently relocated to San Francisco from Incontinence, Ind. His sarcastic redhead (and bloodsucking) girlfriend, Jody, brings him into the fold of the undead (“I wanted us to be together,” she says). Tommy, understandably, has mixed feelings; vampirism has its perks (you can turn to mist, live forever and the sex is awesome), but sunlight is death and blood hunger makes you do some pretty foul things. Also, the duo is hunted by Elijah, the ancient vampire who “turned” Jody and wants her back, and a band of Safeway stock boys/amateur vampire hunters known as the Animals (with whom pre–dark side Tommy once rolled). With the assistance of their devoted minion, goth girl Abby Normal, whose hilarious diary entries form part of the narrative, Tommy and Jody evade their pursuers, feeding at night and conking out at dawn, all the while learning how vampirism complicates love.
“You bitch, you killed me. You suck!”
Being dead sucks. Make that being undead sucks.
Literally. Just ask Thomas C. Flood. Waking up after a fantastic night unlike anything he’s ever experienced, he discovers that his girlfriend, Jody—the woman of his dreams—is a vampire. And surprise! Now he’s one, too.
For some couples, the whole biting-and-blood thing would have been a deal breaker. But Tommy and Jody are in love, and they vow to work through their issues. Like how much Jody should teach Tommy about his new superpowers (and how much he needs to learn on his own). Plus there’s Tommy’s cute new minion, sixteen-year-old goth girl Abby Normal. (Well, someone has to run errands during daylight hours!)
Making the relationship work, however, is the least of Jody and Tommy’s problems. Word has it that the vampire who nibbled on Jody wasn’t supposed to be recruiting any new members into the club. Even worse, Tommy’s erstwhile turkey-bowling pals are out to get him, at the urging of a blue-dyed Las Vegas call girl named (duh) Blue.
And that really sucks.
My Summary & Review: It can’t be denied in a book like this, Love Hurts! In my second read through of You Suck, I have to say I enjoyed and appreciated the book even more. The effortless and subtle way Mr. Moore includes humor into his stories is nothing short of brilliant.
You Suck picks up right where Bloodsucking Fiends left off. In the opening of the story, we find out that 19 year old Tommy has been turned into a vampire by his beloved girlfriend, Jody. And he is kind of pissed about it (until he discovers the joys of hot vampire monkey sex).
Hungry for blood, Tommy and Jody set out to look for a meal and find Chet, a fat cat that seems to be a good supply for them, if they can get past all that fur. Meanwhile, the Emperor of San Francisco has discovered that Tommy is now a vamp and decided to get Tommy’s former buddies, The Animals, involved in taking him down. But the Animals are pretty occupied with their own personal Smurfette!
Seeking a creative way to keep a fresh supply of blood around, Tommy meets Abby, a goth girl with a fixation with vampires! Abby is thrill to become Tommy’s minion, and so sets forth to sever her Dark Lord and Countess; leading to all kinds of fun shenanigans! Including how the newly formed gang of misfits can evade Jody’s sire, Elijah!
The book features all the outrageous characters we met in the first book, and introduces us to a few new ones. And while Tommy is not your average Alpha Male, there is something about him that is totally adorkable and kind of swoon worthy!
You Suck is chock full of crazy storylines that will make you roar with laughter. It does end with a heart tugging moment between Tommy and Jody, but lucky for them, Abby finds a way to save the day!
